A grimy techno punk album haunted by the ghosts of the years of lead, WARDAY’s Stay Behind is chock full of catchy, danceable bangers. The second release from this enigmatic international project features the familiar bone thumping beats and desperate street punk / oi vocal stylings of frontman Les Miserable, but Stay Behind builds on WARDAY’s debut with more ambitious songwriting and lyrical themes, creating clandestine club anthems that are pumping with anxiety, adrenaline, and aggression. Listening through this record vividly conjures up the murky underworld of Western Europe in the 1980s, a microscopic landscape of seedy neon nights and stay behind armies, sweaty gabber dance floors and state sponsored killing sprees, drug fueled manic episodes and mushrooming military checkpoints. By the time we get to the final track, Here Comes The Home Guard, this album feels less like a history lesson and more like a strange time-warped mirror held up to the nightmare world we live in today. Just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean their forces aren’t aligning against you.
