Live extended recording sessions and discussion by VIBRAPHENOMENOLOGY and THE RITA has created 2 discs worth of audio material for Phage Tapes that deeply analyzes the idea of the multitudes of breaking / cracking waves. During the sessions, the conversation was directed by contemporary shipwreck survivor stories and the resulting obsession that ensued as the survivor(s) coped with the same broken patterns of ocean wave form scenery day after day. Aspects of powerful non-linear ocean waves that cause the breakage and submersion of boats directly causes and translates into the nearly identical patterns of the extensively cracked boat hulls. With the use of a Soma Lyra-8 synth, a Soma Ether wideband receiver, vintage radio, and various gated fuzz effects, VIBRAPHENOMENOLOGY and THE RITA were able to effectively take an extended deep dive into the themes and varying movements of the breaking sound.

The Non-Linear Wave (cracks):
“Deep-water wave groups have been known to be unstable and become rogue, causing unsuspecting boats to tip over. This rogue wave behavior results from modulation instability, which generally occurs only for uni-directional waves. Wave focusing—the amplification of waves—is also expected to weaken when interacting with other wave systems. "Our results seem to support the concept of an unperturbed nonlinear water wave group focusing in the presence of counter-propagating waves, implying that the wave states are directional.” – Phys.org

Textures (folds):
“Leibnizian physics includes two principal chapters, the one involving active or so-called derivative forces related to matter, and the other involving passive forces, or the resistance of material or texture. Perhaps only at the limit does texture become most evident, before rupture or tearing, when stretching, no longer being opposed to the fold, now expresses it in its pure state… here the fold still pushes back the opening or the hole. As a general rule the way a material is folded is what constitutes its texture. It is defined less by its heterogenous and really distinct parts than by the style by which they become inseparable by virtue of particular folds… Texture does not depend on the parts themselves, but on strata that determine its "cohesion." - Deleuze

The Boat Hull (cracks):
“The prominence of cracks is another indicator of their significance. When cracks initiate, they usually start out as a very fine fissure. As cracks age, the very sharp edges of the crack will erode over time. That means that the appearance of the crack will be wider or more prominent. At this point, the cracks will appear as clear black lines. If bad enough, they will clearly reveal a fissure. Remember that stress cracks that appear on the exterior bottom are the result of the tension side of the bend since compression loading tends not to produce cracks.” – Yacht Survey

The High and the Low (folds):
“The perfect accord of severing, or the resolution of tension, is achieved through the division into two levels, the two floors being of one and the same world (the line of the universe)… The infinite fold then moves between the two levels. But by being divided, it greatly expands on either side: the fold is divided into folds, which are tucked inside and which spill onto the outside, thus connected as are the high and the low. Pleats of matter in a condition of exteriority, folds in the soul in a condition of closure.
