"katoptronophilia is the fetish in which the mirror becomes the focal point for sexual activity. this is a practice i have engaged in for almost as long as i have been sexually active. i've also been acutely aware that the sense of being looked at is a default condition to be a woman. in my power electronic recordings as himukalt and in my erotic collages, there's a great deal of me attempting to reclaim this dynamic for my own. pushing my depression, my anger, my desire, my hostility to the foreground. and that includes this fetish of mine. in the myriad of my manic-depressive episodes, i find myself dissociating. a lot. so the act of masturbating in front of a mirror while dissociating can intensify the feeling of dissociation. and i lean into it, experiencing my own body as something completely foreign and other. it can be terrifying. liberating. confusing. intoxicating.

i don't expect this to be anybody else's experience, but i wanted to know how other women might engage with this fetish. so i asked, and i approached friends, professionals, fans. with caution and with discretion. the katoptronophilia series was sourced from recordings that were made consensually and in the full awareness of what himukalt is all about. there will be 4 cassettes in this series to be released soon. heavy electronics, sex/death industrial, psychic damage.
