LACQUER
by Matteo Liberatore

CD - Atomic Disc "Wallet Lite"
Edition of 50

After a series of explorations within the idioms of classical and experimental guitar, LACQUER sees Italian-born, Brooklyn-based composer/improviser Matteo Liberatore take a full-fledged plunge into electronic music. The same heightened sense of control essential to his work with strings is mapped onto a layered palette of airtight analog synthesis to deliver what the artist describes as “a work of surface”. At once twisted and trance-like, its eight pieces display a balancing act of dense distortion and mangled textures with razor-sharp precision.

///

Matteo Liberatore is a boundary-pushing guitarist and composer working at the intersection of free, noise, rock and electronic music. Now based in Brooklyn, he spent much of his life in the medieval region of Abruzzo, Italy, amidst dramatic landscapes that are reflected through a performance and composition style of “unsettling beauty” and “striking physicality” (The New York City Jazz Record).

Liberatore is known for his nuanced and precise treatment of timbre, texture, rhythm and gesture—whether through the elegant immediacy of unadorned instrumentation or the affecting dislocation of electronics and preparations. The latter approach can be heard in his first solo album released on Innova Recordings—aptly titled Solos—which was included in Ted Gioia’s best albums of 2018 and presents “a dark world of innovative sounds… strange yet accessible music that seems just a beginning of an exploration of unlimited possibilities." (All About Jazz)

Matteo currently balances several projects: a solo electronic album soon to be released on Tripticks Tapes created entirely with synthesizers, LACQUER, serving as a sequel to Solos and exploring the electrifying boundaries of noise and contemporary composition; a duo with Amirtha Kidambi (vocals) creating “interdimensional” (The Quietus) improvised aural landscapes that are at once spacious and unrestrained, as heard on their debut album Neutral Love (Astral Spirits); and a quartet with an album currently in production comprised of Brian Chase (drums), Vanessa Baish (poetry), and Manami Mizumoto (violin) that explores time-based composed / improvised pieces with a raw rock edge. He is also an active member of New York’s improv scene, having released albums with Ava Mendoza, Joanna Mattrey, gabby fluke-mogul, Elliott Sharp, Weasel Walter, Catherine Sikora, and also having participated in compilations alongside Aaron Dilloway, C. Spencer Yeh, and many others.

During his formative years, Liberatore studied classical guitar under Maestro Marco Salcito at Conservatorio di Foggia; obtained his M.M. in Jazz Performance at NYU, and shortly after toured the U.S. and Europe in art-rock and electropop projects such as Una Lux, which released an EP produced by former Sonic Youth producer Nick Sansano and was reviewed favorably by NPR, WNYC, and Magnum Magazine.
